Making Tax Digital: What UK Businesses Need to Know

HMRC's Making Tax Digital (MTD) initiative continues to reshape how UK businesses and individuals manage their tax affairs. Designed to modernise the tax system, MTD requires digital record-keeping and the use of compatible software to submit returns directly to HMRC, replacing many of the manual and paper-based processes that accountants and business owners have relied on for years.

For VAT-registered businesses, MTD has already been in effect for some time, requiring digital submission of VAT returns through approved software. The next major phase, MTD for Income Tax Self Assessment, extends similar obligations to self-employed individuals and landlords, phasing in based on annual income thresholds. This means quarterly digital updates to HMRC rather than a single annual return, along with a final end-of-period statement.

For businesses and sole traders, the shift brings both challenges and opportunities. On one hand, it demands investment in compatible accounting software and a more disciplined approach to ongoing bookkeeping. On the other, it encourages more frequent visibility into financial performance, helping business owners catch issues early and make more informed decisions throughout the year rather than waiting until year end.

The best way to prepare is to start early: move to cloud-based accounting software, keep digital records of income and expenses as they occur, and work with an accountant who understands the reporting deadlines and technical requirements involved. At KVK Consulting, we help clients transition smoothly to MTD-compliant record-keeping, so that quarterly submissions become a routine part of doing business rather than a last-minute scramble.
